Oriental rugs can be made of real or synthetic fibers, and the dye process is different for both. Synthetic fibers are often solution dyed which means that the color is added before the strand is made, making them resistant to color loss. It is necessary to use dry cleaning on real oriental area rugs to decrease the risk of color loss and bleeding.

Wool is a durable natural fiber. Because it can be damaged by high alkaline cleaners, wool must be cleaned with a pH of 4.5 to 8.5.
